The spatial worlds of Johan Moorman are reminiscent of classic arcade games, the works of graphic artist Escher, and old Lego catalogues. Moorman’s graphics and murals are undeniably Anti-Design, yet elegant in color, lines, and design language.

Johan Moorman (1979) finds inspiration in retro-futuristic images, architecture, music, and technological innovation: Moorman was the one to design the poster for the legendary 2013 Kraftwerk 3D concert series in former technology museum Evoluon in Eindhoven.

Johan Moorman started his career as a graffiti artist from the Dutch City of Light. He likes to explore and didn't stop experimenting, neither in style nor multimedia use. He grew up in a city built on technology and design, and later graduated from the renowned Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

The artist is influenced by De Stijl (neoplasticism), Pop art, and the Memphis Group. Time seems to have frozen in some of his works. They feel like playgrounds that perfectly balance objects and shapes - an adventurous world that needs to be explored.

Series of illustrations commissioned by Gemeente Eindhoven. The illustration is inspired by the history and the current development of the industrial area called NRE. This old harbour area and powerplant made the city grow and provided it’s energy, had bars (and hookers) for workers. After some major toxic soil problems, now there’s new energy and dynamics with some creative studios, bars and condos in development.

technostalgia

This animation honors the Philips machines we used to have in our living room back in the eighties. In that pre-digital era, these machines were my (only) portal to discover art. We used them to watch movies (Philips Laserdisc, play videogames (Philips Videopac) and listen to music (Philips Compact Disc, Philips Cassettedeck). Nowadays you have one gadget for that :)

KUNSTHAL

Wallpainting for Do It exhibition at Kunsthal Rotterdam. This illustration was inspired by the Do It installation of conceptional and performance artist Tino Sehgal: 'You are already doing all of it'. The fluorescent colours contribute to the psychedelic personality of the scenery, which represents the mind and it's multidimensional refinement.

Mural made on the city hall of Dordrecht (NL), marking the 450th anniversary of the Beeldenstorm. This wave of iconoclasm and rebellion that swept over the Low Countries in 1566 eventually brought The Netherlands intellectual and economical enlightening. In my illustration I tried to relate with contemporary politics by picturing collapsing banks, crashed TV's, broken mirrors and coins rolling of the track.

KEITH HARING

Illustration made for Kunsthal and NN DE café. Kunsthal had a big Keith Haring exhibition called The Political LIne and therefor they asked me to make an illustration inspired by his oeuvre. I used one of his paradoxal quotes which I find was appropriate to illustrate in combination with urban and capitalistic objects.
